ninjalord howdy wrc22b.
Ive been playing chess for about 4 years. I have started taking it seriously for about 6 months. I've studied openings, middle game and end game. I know this is a game i'll be still playing in 50 years time. There is no better game in my opinion. My goal is to get to master rating and finally GM, even if it takes me 20 years of studying and playing.

at 8 by mum . . . put on some Pink Floyd.
Actually, in 1968 we went thru several cheapo set Rule Books before it all came together. Such was the state of cheapo set Rules, USA 1968. Even then, it was a shocker at school, when they insisted on getting their King back. :)

26 years of thrill and agony:) Anyone remember the old Atari 2600? You know - Pong, Combat, Asteroids.... I started playing Atari's version way back in 1978. The program was so weak that by age 10 or so I could defeat the program's strongest level with relative ease. It is amazing how far technology has come since then, as now I can barely hold my own against the easiest levels of today's chess machines.......My Asteroids rating is ASTRONOMICAL however....NO ONE can beat me;)

Regards,
Thomas

46 years man and boy I learned chess from my father in 1958 after he bought an ornamental bone chess set in Austria, during a family vacation. The set depicts Napoleon's army as the white pieces and the Austrian rebel army led by Andreas Hofer as the black pieces. In the early 1970's I used to play for Norfolk county and my university in my student days at the University of East Anglia. I met Smyslov in London, during the Kasparov-Korchnoi and Smyslov-Ribli candidates matches. Smyslov graciously kissed my mother on the hand! In 1974 I spectated at the Nice (France) Chess Olympiad. The Russian team included Tal, Petrosian, Spassky, Korchoi, Kuzmin and Karpov, who was soon to become world champion, when Fischer declined to defend his title. Good luck to all GK players - young or old, veterans or novices!! I am alway open to challeges!

A short to mormel12 & tigran mormel12, That's what I shoulda said ! 8-)

[interesting; your Nik would not take, as a link, as first item of post. Until a space put before the id=etc ]

tigran; Wow, ain't that some team!! You gotta give it to the Soviet Chess Fed; they could really field em. Considering they guys that stayed Home. The "B" team
Botvinnik, Smyslov, Bronstein, Taimanov, Stein, Polugaevsky, Gulko, Kotov could probably play with anyone in the world. Maybe toss in a youthful potential, Kasparov. 70's was a great time for Chess.

Hi & Welcome to Chess and/or GK to the newer guys. Sorry to say Chess is incurable you know; but not necessarily fatal :)
ninjalord 9 ( +1 | -1 )
ccmcacollista What do you mean by "not necessarily fatal"? I'm well and truely addicted and hope it is not fatal at all ;)

opinions i have known the moves since the 50s. opinions vary as to whether i can play
humpty-dumpty 91 ( +1 | -1 )
Starting and getting proficiency Dad showed me the moves back in 1964 when I was just a 6 year-old boy, but I can hardly remember if I really liked it then. Later on, in my senior school a pal of mine challenged me for a match and even encouraged to compete in the school championship which I failed, though. Since then I've become pretty addicted to the game of chess and studied it with lots of enthusiasm. My first books on chess were 'Opening Traps and Combinations' by Weinstein and Averbakh's 'Trip to Chess Kingdom'. More serious books came at hand later, but a very acute and attacking style was shaped under the impact of those two initial books. I still like sacrificing and attacking much more than defending in a boresome endgame, alas. However, the endgame technique training should come first according to the chess grand players like Lasker,Capablanca or Tarrasch.

I have played chess almost as long as I can remember. I come from a chessfamily and learn the game from my grandfather when I was about 5 years old. A few years later I joined a chessclub and that really started my chesscareer.
chrisp 35 ( +1 | -1 )
A while Learnt to play when I was about 6 or 7. But didn't really play until about 11 years old, when I joined a local club - played there regularly for about 13 years or so. then stopped playing until I joined GK late last year. The site is great and I'm really glad to be back playing again :-)

My grandfather taught me to play about 15 years ago, and for maybe a year we would get together and play all day about once a week. For some reason, I completely stopped after that ... for almost 12 years. I just picked the game up again about 3 years ago.

I'm pretty much an 'on again, off again' player' i.e. I'll get excited about the game and study daily for several months, and then I'll hardly play at all for several months. Hopefully I can quit that, and start to actually improve!

too long
maykx 12 ( +1 | -1 )
I'm already 33 but... I think I'm in this game for only 5 years or less........
I don't even remember how I got to learn this game! Weird!
oldhamer 37 ( +1 | -1 )
Too long! Nah, I love this game! Been playing since about 7 years old (so 9/10 years now) and learned mainly from a Ray Keene book (he was an English GM who now writes for the Times). I went to an Oldham Town team under 9s trial, and did quite well. I was also pointed in the direction of a junior chess club, and have been addicted to chess ever since...
